Welcome to the Colosseum
The greatest amphitheater the world has ever known
Picture this: you're standing in a crowd of 50,000 roaring Romans. The sun beats down on a massive stone arena stretching higher than a 15-story building. Below, trapdoors burst open and wild animals leap into the arena. Gladiators march out in gleaming armor, saluting the Emperor.
This was the Colosseum — officially called the Flavian Amphitheatre — and for nearly 400 years it was the beating heart of entertainment in ancient Rome. Built in just 8 years using 100,000 cubic meters of stone, it featured 36 trapdoors, mechanical elevators, and even a retractable sunshade.
Today, though two-thirds of the original structure has been lost to earthquakes and stone robbers, the Colosseum remains one of the most recognizable buildings on Earth. Let's step inside and explore its secrets!
